The Rolls-Royce RB-211 turbofan engines made their debut in the 1970’s, notably on the Lockheed L-1011 airliner, a high-tech tri-engine aircraft. Since then, Boeing’s 747s and 757s utilized further variants. Distinctive to this engine from the disco era, it featured a very smooth nacelle design with a mixer cone in the back.

Artist's comment: I first learned about the RB211 engines from pilots' stories about the Boeing 757. They considered the RB211-powered 757s the Corvettes or Shelby Cobras of airliners. The colors were inspired by the palettes of the 70's...and watching some clips of the Carol Burnett Show...
