P-40 WARHAWK - Desert Skies

$69.00 USD

In the world of historic warbird icons, the P-40 Warhawk built by Curtiss is among those that are easily remembered. The most unique personality of the P-40s were their "shark" mouths, sometimes called tiger mouths depending on squadrons and theatres. While outshined by the North American P-51 Mustang and its higher altitude performance, the P-40 never lost its usefulness in World War 2, oftentimes being used for and excelling at lower altitude operations. These warbirds are also quite connected with the desert due to their widespread use during the North African campaigns in WW2, and this aviation art print features two desert-camo P-40s flying high in the warm climate.

Artist's comment: I can't recall what platform of media I first saw a P-40, but I know it was shown in a desert setting. Only a decade ago did I learn it was a "P-40", and they were THE aircraft with the toothy nose art. There were many ways I could draw the P-40, and despite my interest in mentioning that nose art, I chose a rearward view. I came across a photo of a desert camo P-40 taxing at a small airfield, and the curves of the fuselage and the dihedral angle of the wings seen from the rear caught my interest. I couldn't resist and decided my first fully colored P-40 art should showcase the warbird from the rear. The livery was inspired by some real life designs, but I tried my own take on it.
